Virtual FTP is available to MBL faculty, students and staff only. The Virtual FTP Server allows you to move large amounts of data across our network using a dedicated server. Virtual FTP is for files that are too big for floppy disks or email, or for simple convenience. (Please note: you can also access the Virtual FTP Server using an FTP client. Simply go to ftp.mbl.edu and use your FTP Username and FTP Password to access your account.) To use Virtual FTP, follow these simple instructions:
    To Create an Account
  • Open Internet Explorer on a PC, Netscape on a Macintosh.
  • Go to http://ftp.mbl.edu.
  • Enter your Username and Password. Your Username is your last name and your Password is your 5-digit Access Number on the front of your MBLWHOI Library Access card.

  • Select "Create New Account."
  • Click "Continue."

  • Enter an FTP Username and an FTP Password. You create these.
  • Wait 5 minutes.

  • Enter your FTP Password (the FTP Password you just created!)

  • Drag and drop documents from your desktop into your browser window.
  • When you are finished, click to a new site or close the browser window to exit.
