Institutional Repositories (IR) are places where the intellectual property of institutions is digitally stored and made available on the internet. The mission of Woods Hole Open Access Server (WHOAS) is to digitally capture, communicate, and preserve the intellectual output of the Woods Hole scientific community. WHOAS is an open access server and its content is easily searched and web accessible to all users within and outside the Woods Hole scientific community


WHOAS runs on the DSpace software platform developed by MIT and HP. It is hosted by the MBLWHOI Library at https://darchive.mblwhoilibrary.org/index.jsp.

General Guidelines for Content Contribution to WHOAS


Suggestions for content contribution include:

Scholarly work that has already been published*. Check SHERPA for publishers' policies.
  • Articles as they appear in print (i.e., publisher's PDF), or in lieu of, final drafts (post peer review) of articles in the scientific press.
  • Books
  • Book chapters
  • Technical reports

Scholarly work that is complete and ready for publication. Check SHERPA for publishers' policies.
  • Final drafts (post peer review) of forthcoming articles.

Conference and workshop presentations*
  • Conference papers
  • Conference papers w/PowerPoint presentations

Student contributions (not listed above)
  • MIT/WHOI Joint Program Ph.D. or Sc.D. Dissertation, or Master's Thesis (can be embargoed for a limited time period)
  • WHOI Summer Fellows' written reports

Data sets (can be embargoed for a limited time period)
  • Images
  • Maps
  • Recordings
  • Videos

*In all cases, the content contributor must have copyright ownership and/or distribution rights within U.S. Copyright Law.
