A Place, a Portal, a Partner
For over a century, the MBLWHOI Library has been the intellectual heart of the Woods Hole scientific community. Today the Library is internationally recognized as defining current trends and practices in marine information sciences and bioinformatics.

The Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution maintain a vital partnership in the day-to-day operation of the MBLWHOI Library. The Library continues to build one of the most unique print and electronic literature collections in the biological, biomedical, ecological, and oceanographic sciences. The Library has broken the physical barriers of the charming village and surrounding waters of Woods Hole, to serve the cutting edge bio information needs of affiliated researchers worldwide, often no more than a single email message away.

In addition to serving MBL and WHOI scientists daily, the staff and resources of the MBLWHOI Library are utilized year round by the distinguished resident research and education programs of the Boston University Marine Program, the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, the Sea Education Association, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, and the United States Geological Survey. The Library also supports a unique summer population of visiting researchers and students from more than 200 institutions worldwide.

  • Technical report collections including WHOI Technical Reports, Memoranda, and MIT/WHOI Joint program theses. The DLA also collects marine science related technical reports produced by other government agencies and research institutions (such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Scripps Institution of Oceanography), as well as the WHOI Oral History Project
  • Maps, nautical charts, geologic and bathymetric maps, and cruise tracks

National Marine Fisheries Service/Northeast Fisheries Science Center Woods Hole Laboratory Library NMFS Library collection includes:

  • Journals and reference books covering fisheries management, economics, fish stock assessments and statistics

Informatics and Information Resources
Each spring and autumn, the MBLWHOI Library and the National Library of Medicine administer a comprehensive course of study in BioMedical Informatics. This intensive course ensures that on the vital national level, researchers, physicians, and information specialists are on the cutting edge of biomedical communication. More information is available at http://courses.mbl.edu/ Medical Informatics/index.html. In addition, MBLWHOI and NLM offer over 30 short courses each year in applied information science and database usage instruction.

The MBLWHOI Library is a founding member of the groundbreaking virtual Bioscience Consortium, which includes the American Museum of Natural History, Rockefeller University, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and New York Botanical Garden.

The Library is an active contributing member of the Boston Library Consortium, which provides consortia ownership of databases and journals, as well as developing and implementing standards and practices for research libraries in the New England region.
