Submitting Requests
Library patrons can now use our online request form or the paper forms that are available in the library office. Please check our library catalog to determine if our library has the material you need. The forms should be filled out as completely as possible. If you have any questions about filling out the form or are unsure what bibliographic information to use for your request, please consult Library staff. The Library will process interlibrary loan requests for any MBLWHOI library books in circulation if the book cannot be recalled. We will also request articles from journals that we own if the relevant volume is at the bindery, is at the Harvard Depository or has been declared missing.

The Interlibrary Loan services offered by the MBLWHOI Library include borrowing from other libraries, purchasing articles through commercial vendors, lending to other libraries, and inter-campus photocopy requests. Interlibrary Loan is a service offered to registered MBLWHOI Library patrons to provide access to research materials not available at the MBLWHOI Library. Patrons should check to see if the title is in the Library's online catalog before making a request. The conditions of this service are set by the Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association, U.S. Copyright Law, and by the regulations of individual libraries. The MBLWHOI Library ILL Practices & Guidelines reflect these conditions to provide the most effective service possible. The Interlibrary Loan desks are located in the MBL Lillie building (L230) and WHOI Clark Laboratory (131C). Staff can be reached at 508-289-7436 (MBL) and 508-289-2708 (WHOI).

Practices and Guidelines
Borrowing from Other Libraries
If the Library does not own a book or journal title, patrons from the Woods Hole scientific community can request a book loan or article photocopy located at another library. Patrons should check to see if the title is in the Library's online catalog before making the request.
Eligibility
All currently registered library patrons, including readers, faculty and students are eligible to use the Interlibrary Loan service. Please check with library staff if you are unsure of your status. Others are urged to contact their home institution or their local public library.
Limitations on Loans
The following types of materials are generally not available via Interlibrary Loan:
  1. Rare books and archival materials
  2. Material owned by the MBLWHOI library
  3. Journal volumes
Time Requirement & Rush Service
Materials take from 4 hours to 7 days from the time they are requested depending on the borrowing library. If there is a problem locating a lender then it may take longer. In certain cases articles may be requested on a rush basis. Books cannot be rushed. For prompt attention, rush requests should be brought to the attention of library staff for processing.
Loan Periods
Loan periods are set by the lending library. They generally range from 2-4 weeks.
Renewals
The libraries that lend us materials generally require that a renewal be requested before the initial loan period is up. Accordingly, the Library encourages our patrons to ask for a renewal before the loan period is past due.
Cost to Patrons
The library tries to borrow material from libraries that will loan for free. If we need to get the material from libraries that charge, the costs will be passed along to the patron. Please include an account number or contact library staff with any concerns regarding charges and payments.
Notification & Delivery of Loan Materials
The patron will be notified of arrival by telephone or email, unless intercampus delivery is indicated on the request form. Material may be picked up in the library office between the hours of 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Any other questions? Contact at MBL 289-7436 or at WHOI 289-2708.
