SCIENCE IS WE - MBL SUMMER 1954
Detlev Bronk in a Boat Race, c. 1954
Detlev Bronk, director of the Rockefeller Institute and summer resident of Woods Hole, is at the tiller, accompanied by his son, Ramsey, and WHOI scientist Paul Ferris Smith. They share the thrill of the annual "Around the Island" race sponsored by the Edgartown Yacht Club. Bronk carried a briefcase on board, for liquor rather than work: "There is nothing in the rules to say you cannot stoke your engine," he quipped.
