The science of embryology began with the study of Vertebrata and has been a mainstay of the MBL teaching curriculum since the Laboratory founding in 1888. Fish embryos have been used to study histogenesis of the brain, differentiation of rods and cones in the retina, and have played an important role in the development of drugs for contraception and in the treatment of birth defects.
